Fic: By Rote (James/Harry, Rated NC-17) - a Dexter pastiche :D

The REVEAL for [info]hpfamilyfuncest has finally gone up so I can FINALLY admit which fic I wrote. Guys, I was BLOWN AWAY by the response. A lot of people I really respect commented and liked it and, most importantly of all, [info]lizardspots loved it. Of course she also TOTALLY KNEW I WROTE IT, so lol. Because honestly? I think only I could have written this. My ability to write psychological disorders, specifically those of serial killers, is somewhat disturbing. I should have been a psychology major :P

And, sigh, this is my first IJ only fic post! I will link from LJ, but this baby can only exist on IJ's servers - underage Harry ahoy! *buries head in sand*

Title: By Rote
Author: NQDonne
Rating: NC-17+some
Pairing: James/Harry
Summary: Just because your child kills one animal, it doesn't mean they're abnormal.
Warnings: Other than incest? Patchy psychological analysis, overuse of italics, intellislash tactics and the word 'wrong.' And it's AU obviously, as James/Harry tends to be (no D/H spoilers or references).
Word Count: approx. 9,000
Author's Notes: Written for [info]lizardspots for the 2007 [info]hpfamilyfuncest. She essentially asked for a "Dexter" pastiche, which was exceedingly fun to write, though a major pain keeping a secret from her for nearly five months. "Dexter" is a Showtime series, based on a series of novels, about a sociopath who only kills other killers. Part of its premise is that Dexter's adopted father, Harry (ha!), was a cop who taught Dexter from the time he was a young boy to channel his murderous urges and only target those who "deserved it." More info here. Thanks to my veritable army of betas, like Dumbledore's Army, only without an applicable Umbridge figure in the metaphor :P

Early signs of anti-social personality disorder, more commonly known as the precursor personality type of the psychopath (though the two are not mutually exclusive), are cruelty to animals and pyromania. James knew this from Auror training, where they did a module on the Muggle social sciences as a tool for understanding the dark roots of a Death Eater. )
